"Before Learn Amp, training levels were plateauing and in some cases even declining – but now they’re on an upward trajectory. We’ve been able to introduce an incentive system for our in-store employees based on training, which has only been possible since we introduced the Learn Amp platform.”
Chris Dwyer, Learning Systems Manager, Specsavers

The Context
Specsavers is the world’s largest privately owned optometry business, with over 2,200 stores and 35,000 colleagues serving 40 million people across 10 countries. Founded nearly 40 years ago by a husband-and-wife optometrist team, it has grown into the leading eye care provider in both Australia and New Zealand.
COVID-19 had a major impact across the region, disrupting access to eye care for over 40% of Australians and half of all New Zealanders.
The Challenge
Specsavers’ learning model in ANZ was built around in-person workshops at six city-based academies. For most team members, that meant long travel, high costs, and time away from customers.
But the bigger issue? Training was measured by attendance, not by how well people could do their jobs.
The L&D team set a bold new strategy to fix this. Learning needed to happen in stores at the right time, in the right place, with a focus on reducing time-to-competence. The plan included bite-sized content, multi-channel delivery, self-directed and peer learning, and the ability to identify capability gaps quickly.
Their existing legacy LMS couldn’t support any of it. It wasn’t intuitive, flexible, or built for modern, blended learning. It couldn’t surface performance insights, personalise learning, or deliver on-the-job content at the point of need.
Workarounds piled up. Admin time ballooned. Data was patchy. And despite a clear vision, progress was slow.
Specsavers needed a platform that could turn strategy into action.
The Solution
After a thorough review, Specsavers partnered with Learn Amp to bring their new learning strategy to life - one built around access, agility, and learner ownership. The platform offered an intuitive experience, reduced admin time, and enabled decentralised, in-store learning that met team members where they were.
With a clear vision: Right Learning. Right Time. Right Place, Specsavers focused on transforming learning culture, experience, and management across the region.
On-brand and Built for Their Workforce
Specsavers launched iLearn using Learn Amp’s full branding customisation, creating a platform that felt distinctively theirs and helped embed learning into the company culture from day one.
They also adapted login options to suit their environment, enabling all store colleagues to access iLearn, even those without individual email addresses.
Fast Rollout to 6,000 Users
In-app pop-ups, a welcome Learnlist, and personalised dashboards enabled a fast, consistent rollout, bringing 6,000 team members onto the platform without the need for repeated training sessions. Ongoing campaigns like ‘Month in Focus’ and role-specific ‘How Do I?’ channels continue to engage learners and highlight timely content.
Structured Onboarding & Upskilling
By using Learnlists and Channels (featuring eLearning, documents and videos in structured modules), Specsavers created clear onboarding pathways and specialist training for roles like their Optics teams. These fully automated and award-winning journeys, ensure that new starters hit the ground running without manual admin.
Decentralised control was also a key win. In-store trainers and subject matter experts can now manage and share relevant content, giving the L&D team more time to focus on strategic goals.
Expert Training, Delivered Differently
Previously delivered face-to-face, specialist training is now hosted and tracked through Learn Amp. Using the Zoom integration, Specsavers can deliver virtual events, automate recordings, and track attendance, all in one place.
Managing Risk & Maintaining Compliance
Operating in a highly-regulated industry, Specsavers successfully migrated nearly 2 million historical learning records into iLearn. This preserved full reporting visibility across current and former team members.
Automated task flows, reminders, and session timeouts further support compliance and data security, crucial in busy store environments where team members are often on the move.

“Great to be able to see people’s progress for training. It allows me to be more in touch with how people are progressing. I love that it is personalised to allow the individual to set their own goals by setting their own tasks. Much better clarity of what content is available in the system. So much easier to find things and access them."

The Result
Greater engagement, measurable impact
With the launch of Learn Amp, Specsavers saw an immediate lift in engagement and efficiency. On day one, 1,596 users logged in to the new iLearn platform, with daily activity averaging 1,000 visits in the first three weeks - a 46% increase over the previous system.
The platform’s intuitive, mobile-friendly design enabled learning anytime, anywhere, driving higher adoption and deeper capability building across the business.
77% Admin Time Saved
Key L&D processes became dramatically more efficient:
- Uploading and publishing content: 60 mins → 5 mins
- Creating events: 15 mins → 5 mins
- Updating user information: 5 mins → 2 mins
This saved 23 hours per week, equating to $54,880 annually.
Designing and launching new programmes dropped from 16 hours to 2, an 87.5% time saving. adding another $7,818 in yearly savings.
Total savings in year one: $62,698 for the L&D team, $128,000 across the business.
Agile Learning in Action
Just two days after launch, a sudden COVID lockdown in Victoria put iLearn to the test. Within two hours of the announcement, Specsavers created and deployed lockdown-specific Learnlists, added virtual workshops, and notified teams - something that previously took two full days.
In 13 days:
- 717 users accessed the Learnlist
- 22,436 content views
- 1,796 compliance completions
- 621 virtual workshop attendees
This approach has since been rolled out nationally, contributing to a 47% reduction in time-to-competence.
Learning Decentralised to Stores
A core goal for Specsavers was to decentralise learning by equipping every store with an In-Store Trainer (IST). With Learn Amp:
- IST coverage rose from 68% to 90% of stores (100% in QLD)
- ISTs at Bronze level grew by 38%
- Team capability at Level 2 rose by 18%
The platform also enabled structured assessments and tracked progression across Levels 1 to 3, resulting in a more capable, confident workforce.
